Following on from our very successful visit to Pithiviers in 2006, we have now committed to our next overseas visit, for Spring Bank Holiday week in 2008. This time the Band, together with friends and family supporters, will be travelling to the Black Forest area in Germany and give several concerts and outdoor performances. We have engaged a specialist professional tour company to make all the tour arrangements.
A considerable amount of thought and planning has gone into making the trip succesful and rewarding musically, as well as providing an opportunity for Band members to relax and enjoy a short holiday in this beautiful region of Germany - renowned for its hospitality. |
Details of the timings and venues are still being finalised but it is provisionally planned to set out in the very early hours of Monday 26 May by coach, arriving at Lahr, our base for the visit, that evening.
On our first day in the Region we will travel to Baden-Baden and give an afternoon concert on the Kurhaus Open-Air Stage with its unique mussel-dome canopy - a prestigious venue normally occupied by the Baden-Baden Philharmonic.
The Kurhaus enjoys a unique Belle Epoch styled elegance. Whether it’s a concert, a casino visit, a midnight dinner or a star-studded ball, the Kurhaus represents Baden-Baden’s glittering centre stage. Built between 1821 and 1824, by Friedrich Weinbrenner, the Kurhaus, with its stylish banqueting rooms and suites, can cater for all manner of special occasions. |

On Wednesday we travel to Bad Krozingen via Freiburg. There will be time to enjoy the sights of this beautiful and historic city before we travel to our concert venue in Bad Krozingen to give an evening concert in the modern Kurhaus at the Spa Centre.
The Spa Centre hosts a rich variety of cultural events throughout the year. "The Mozart festival at the beginning of April is a true joy for lovers and connoisseurs of classical music. And this is soon followed by the start of Bad Krozingen’s open air season. Everyday, the Johann-Strauß-Ensemble plays for the spa concert. And in July and August visitors can look forward to major highlights such as the Springs and Light Festival in which 15,000 candles and lanterns bathe the spa park in an illuminated sea of lights. This is followed by a festival event with open air folk music, a classical event with Justus Frantz and his orchestra “Philharmonia of the Nations” and the rock and pop open air concert in the spa park. Culture wherever you look!"
And Ashby Concert Band will be adding their name to list of performers when we give our concert in the Kurhaus on Wednesday 28th May.

On Thursday we travel to Lake Titisee in the southern part of the Black Forest to give an afternoon performance on the bandstand overlooking the lake. "Titisee" is a health resort with many hotels and inns. In a community reform programme the town was connected with the town of " Neustadt" and now it is called "Titisee-Neustadt". It has developed into an attractive and lively centre offering much to the visiting tourists.
The lake is a kind of natural reservoir, whose water is dammed up by glacial moraines. It is two kilometres long and 700 metres wide and with that it is the largest natural lake in the Black Forest. It was presumably named after the Roman emperor Titus. Today the lake is a popular place for outings. You can walk around it in 1 1/2 hours on a pleasant path or you can go fishing, wind-surfing or sailing.
Visit the Titisee website for more details at:

The tour will be expensive and a significant demand on the Band's resources. But hopefully it will be both very enjoyable for players and their supporters, and also help to develop our players musically, especially our young players, who it is hoped will also benefit a great deal educationally.
We are actively seeking financial support from both individuals and organisations and would welcome any additional help from our supporters. If you do feel you would like to provide financial support to help the Band undertake this proposed tour then please contact the Band Chairman, Mr Dave Curtis.
